Talks and Workshops Offered

Below is a list of talks I have prepared and deliver for the Theosophical Society of New Zealand. They last around 90 minutes including question time. They are suitable for a wide range of audience.

Fairy Stories and Archetypes

Victor MacGill published “When the Dragon Stirs: Healing our Wounded Lives through Fairy Stories, Myths and Legends” in 1995.  He looks at four key archetypes of the King, Warrior, Magician and Lover as described by Carl Jung and Robert Moore. He also examines our shadow aspect in the form of the dragon and the treasure. In his talk he will show how these archetypes are found in common fairy stories like Jack and the Beanstalk and Cinderella, shedding light on our spiritual journey of life.

This could be an evening talk, a one day workshop or a two day workshop

Ervin Laszlo: Integral Adventures in Quantum Consciousness

Ervin Laszlo, Hungarian scientist linking science and spiritual development explores the world within the atom, in great galaxies and at the human level and finds them all linked by a quantum vacuum he equates to the Akashic Field of Hindu beliefs. Ervin Laslzo proposes that the quantum vacuum is itself conscious and so every place and every time contains consciousness. He is also particularly concerned with how we are destroying our planet and gives some suggestions as to what we need to do to survive through the 21st century,

This is an evening talk.

Spiral Dynamics

Spiral Dynamics is a theory of levels of human consciousness developed by psychologist Clare Graves in the 1960s and 1970s. He describes the development of human societies through nine levels from small family groups living at a subsistence level through to levels of global consciousness. The talk goes through each of these levels and shows how we understand the levels and how they interact can open a whole new level of understanding of human and spiritual development. Victor learned Spiral Dynamics from one of the two key students, who took over the task of promoting Spiral Dynamics after the death of Clare Graves.

Chaos Theory

Science has traditionally analysed any subject by dividing it into smaller and smaller parts until they are all understood. This means we miss out on the big picture. Chaos Theory is a new scientific Theory that looks at whole systems rather than just looking at the parts. We find the world to be a dynamic mix of order and chaos. Find out what the “Butterfly Effect” is all about and learn how the way trees grow, the shape of our lungs, how we design our highways, how an ant colony is organised, the number of people killed in wars, populations of cities and the size of your bank account are all linked by the same underlying pattern.

Complexity Theory

Complexity Theory investigates systems with large parts that are organised and co-operate together, like the trillions cells all working together as one human being. We look at many different types of networks, such as social networks, postal networks, the internet, power grids and airlines and see the common links. We look at tipping points, the six degrees of separation and complexity based computer simulations. We can use these understandings to help structure organisations and link science with the principles of spirituality.

Victor MacGill has been studying Chaos and complexity for 15 years, has an MA in complexity, 2 published articles and has presented papers or given presentations at 5 international complexity conferences. His website, complexity.orcon.net.nz, gives more background and has been running for five years and had over 60,000 visitors.

Chaos Theory and Complexity Theory are heavily linked together.
I offer an evening talk on either or both and one or two day workshops on both .

The Collapse of Civilisation

This talk looks at where we have evolved to as a civilisation, what holds our society together and what are the ways societies break down. The talk uses some of the concepts from Chaos Theory and Complexity Theory to understand the dynamics of modern day life. We then look at the threats we face in the future and the types of spiritual development we need to cope and grow into this 21st century.

This is an evening talk.

Intuition: A Scientific, Esoteric Monty Python Approach

This humourous talk first looks at how our brain functions, how it evolved and the nature of free will from the point of view of mainstream scientists. Next, it looks at the science of Quantum Mechanics, which opens the possibility that our consciousness might exist outside of our brain and that universal consciousness is the source of our intuition. Finally the talk discusses ways to improve how we use our intuition.

This is an evening talk.

The Fourfold Aspects to Reality

The talk looks at a basic cycle of life as described in the "adaptive cycle" developed by Buzz Holling and Lance Gunderson. This is viewed as a mandala unfoilding through time rather than a graphic representation in two - dimensional space. It moves through four pahese of exploitation, conservation, release and reorganisation and is seen in ecological systems, financial systems, biological systems, organisational systems and much more.
