Welcome

Sonja and I are settling in to life in Wagga Wagga. I am just waiting for final conformation of acceptance to undertake a Research Methods paper through Charles Sturt University starting in July, which should allow me to start my PhD around the end of the year. I ahve found i am eligible to have all my tuition fees paid and there is at least one scholarship I can apply for.

Parliament buildings, CanbberraThis month I went to Canberra for a free workshop with CSIRO on agent based simulations of complex systems. It was a good try out for the new car. I was able to drive at 110km/hr for much of the journey that you cannot do in New Zealand.  I also had time to have a look around Canberra and saw the national museum,  war memorial, par;liament (pictured) and a science centre. The workshop was great. I made good contacts and got some great advice for the future,

I have also signed up for a 9 week telecourse with Integral Enlightenment which begins in a couple of weeks.

Books I have Read

The brain that changes itselfThe Brain that Changes Itself: Stories of Personal Triumph from the Frontiers of Brain Science by Norman Doige

This book was published in 2007 examining the plasticity of thr human brain. The accepted wisdom for so long has been that after childhood the brain and its neurons are fixed and that any damage was irreparable.  The accepted wisdom also describes the brain as being strictly compartmentalised with specific areas being responsible for specific tasks. Norman Doige challenges both these assumptions constantly citing research that shows how the brain can create new neural pathways or use other parts of the brain to continue functioning in the best way possible.

Books I read this month

Social Intelligence by Daniel Goleman

Social IntelligenceDaniel Goleman wrote this as a companion book to his  book emotional intelligence and briliantly shows how intelligence os far more than the IQ number we have seen as the measure of intelligence for so long. In this book he links more to neurological processes, including much up to date research to back up his case.
