This was an unprecedented event in the history of Maori, an amazing moment in the relationship of the indigenous people and the nation. It was highly significant on two counts. First the sacred knowledge they proposed to share had never before been revealed outside the closed doors of the Whare Wananga, the inner school of learning. Secondly, they had asked a Pakeha, a white person, and a teacher within the academic world, to become the custodian of their greatest treasure. To this day many Maori wonder why the elders stepped beyond their own to find the voice to carry their message to the world. Their decision is still discussed within the inner and the outer circles. Perhaps the vehemence of the debate reveals the wisdom of the course they chose. To have placed the burden on one of their own would have unleashed even greater jealousies amongst those who wished to use the sacred in ways that are not of the sacred.
