Spring 2006 Newsletter Everything is thriving at Bergli......even the gorse and the broom! Now is the time when Max spends many days on top of Bergli Hill with the chainsaw, clearing it all way, to preserve our pastures for the cows. We have a dream of a mountain hut up there which would have glorious views and wonderful sunrises. There is now a loop farm track up there, which means the tools can be taken there for various projects. All the animals are happy and healthy, and this year we have 5 new lambs....lovely black ones. Two sets of twins. We have inherited another cat called Muffin, and a sheep called Phoebe. Just yesterday we had a shearing day with vaccinations and drenching as well, as a hot summer is predicted. Now...what is our news.... |

| Max suddenly decided to take off to Switzerland
in June, because of his father's 90th birthday celebration, and Marco
his son moving to Switzerland to discover his Swiss roots. Max spent 3
weeks catching up with friends and introducing Marco to relations, and
his beloved mountains. Rowena enjoyed a relaxing time doing gardening and wool crafts, wallowing in the fascinating worlds of felting, weaving, dyeing and spinning. She is very proud of her creation: a cushion cover made from the wool of her Gotland sheep, which she dyed, spun and wove. |

We had an incredibly wet winter, with floods, land slips and heavy snow falls. One morning we drove off to go to town....or so we thought. A land slide from the bank, over the drive, meant 3 of us spent the whole morning digging the mud off the drive, and digging the fence out! Of course as farmers we welcomed the rain...but maybe we asked for it too much. The cows walked everywhere in mud, the tracks were unusable and claimed a few gumboots when we had to walk up to check on the cows. The grass got trampled into the mud, with huge braking slips, where the cows had slipped while trying to stop sliding down the hill! That was funny to watch..... |

And after that a dry September. We had decided on a sailing winter holiday but it got postponed when the engine in the boat blew up! So the engine got reconditioned and we spent 3 weeks with the boat out of the water, doing repairs, painting, cleaning etc. Then in early September at last we got away. We sailed around the northern bays of Banks Peninsula...Port Levy, Little Akaloa, and Pigeon Bay. We kayaked most days, and walked a lot too. It was glorious with wonderful spring weather. On the last day we sailed up to Brighton then back into Lyttelton Harbour....just in time for the meteor which exploded over Christchurch with a huge sonic BOOM!!!!!
