The 60th Wedding Anniversary of
Max`s parents in Switzerland  was a time for celebrating with a family reunion. With two of the sons in New Zealand  it doesn`t happen so easily,
Because of our trip to Nepal in March we hoped we could scrape enough money together to buy a ticket for Max. Then, around  May Max did some work putting in second panes of glass to double glaze an existing room. The clients were so impressed they had the whole house done....and told friends and neighbors.
Max and Rowena in the Alps

Max with his two brothers and parents.
And so a new business was born, which Max worked very hard at. Then one day he came up covered in dust, gave me a big hug and a kiss, and said "Rowie, we are going to Switzerland together!"
So, in mid August off we went. The first week was spent celebrating with the family, meeting the new great nephews, and visiting the Dorfliger clan. A very special time.
During the next week Rowena flew to Hungary, Budapest, to visit her older brother Stefan and his family. Max was visiting friends and doing a little climbing.
For the last two weeks we were lucky enough to be able to borrow a car  and set off traveling during the week, and back to the family in the  little village of Fulenbach in Solothun Canton.
We paid a nostalgic trip to Mt Eiger which Max climbed as part of the team which did the first Winter direct route climb, in 1970.
We also spent a night in a friends hay barn, then went up the gondola and climbed down Schilthorn. Such fantastic scenery with the Alps, and villages with no cars. The houses are so incredible, dating back to 1400 etc. With the carvings and flower boxes, they look so charming. We enjoyed a visit to Ballenburg Open Air Museum which has old houses from all over Switzerland, in a lovely farm and park setting. With hens pecking ,cow bells chiming and the carpenter making shingles for the roof, it really is a step back into time.
And back to Bergli....to find Francie has her calf named Snowstorm (what a time to choose for a first calf!) and Princess had twin black lambs. So one of the first jobs was to put a ring on the calf to make sure we didn`t end up with a bull.
Three enterprising American students came for a work exchange, so we took advantage of the numbers and herded the calf into a corner of the paddock. On the third attempt Rowena managed to tackle him, they got his front and hind legs together and she covered his eyes. Max quickly got ready, then said in a puzzled voice....."I can`t find it....it....it...it`s a girl!"  What a laugh we had.
